Experience Breathtaking Views and History on a Scenic Train Ride
The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway is located in the historic town of Jim Thorpe. Previously known as Mauch Chunk, a Leni Lenape Native American name meaning “Bear Mountain,” Jim Thorpe is at the heart of the Pocono Mountains, and the scenic railway is the crown jewel. Whether you’re here for the colorful face of fall or the sweet breeze of spring, there’s never a bad time to experience the thrill of the Poconos. The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway is waiting to whisk you away on the adventure of a lifetime!
About the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway
With the completion of a railroad bridge across the Lehigh River in Jim Thorpe in 2005, the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway was born. The scenic railway is a sister company to the Reading and Northern Railroad and runs from New Jersey Station in Jim Thorpe straight into Lehigh Gorge State Park. If you’re looking for an easy way for the whole family to experience the history of Jim Thorpe and the natural beauty of the Poconos in one trip, there isn’t a better option.
The Experience
The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway features vintage stage coaches updated to meet modern standards of comfort. The entire trip is narrated, giving you a rundown of the area’s storied past and pointing out all of the can’t-miss landmarks. As the railway puts it, the trip takes you past “Lehigh River, over bridges, through Glen Onoko, and into the Lehigh Gorge State Park. High-rising cliffs, mountain scenery, and wildlife surround the train along the forested route to Old Penn Haven.” Ride in the front car or the caboose, an incredible view and an unforgettable ride greet you either way. Explore your options for available trains right here. You can even bring dogs along for free on this 70-minute drive!
How to Plan Your Trip
The scenic railway operates on weekends, holidays, and select weekdays in December. If you’re trying to plan your next visit, check out the train’s regular schedule to find a time that works for you! Trains typically depart from Jim Thorpe at 11 a.m, 1 p.m, and 3 p.m. on operational days. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket booth next to the station on the day of your voyage. The railway recommends getting their 30 minutes before departure to allow enough time to make the purchase and still catch the train!
