Fall in the Poconos: Scenic Drives, Foliage, and Seasonal Fun

Fall in the Poconos has a way of turning a simple weekend into something worth remembering. Color starts creeping in by late September, and it peaks somewhere around mid to late October here in Pocono Pines.

We love this time of year, and we start pointing you toward our favorite drives and trails the moment those first leaves turn. You don't need a packed itinerary or a strict plan. You just need a good route, a little time, and the right week for your Poconos fall getaway.

Fall in the Poconos feels a little extra special. The crowds thin out, the mornings turn crisp, and the ridgelines turn gold and red almost overnight.

You'll want a sweater by breakfast and the gas fireplace going by dinner. Trails busy in July open up fast by October, changing the whole pace of your stay. Lake Naomi reflects the color, too, gold and red right back at you. Down the road, Jim Thorpe throws its own fall festival if you want more than a quiet weekend.

Poconos fall foliage peaks in just a few spots each year. Here are the top spots we love sending our guests for the prettiest foliage.

Drive to the top of Camelback Mountain, and you'll get a payoff most people miss. Big Pocono's 1.4-mile summit loop puts you above the tree line, with color stretching in every direction. Catch it on a clear October day, and you can spot three states from the overlook, a rare view of fall colors in the Poconos.

The Delaware Water Gap puts on one of its biggest shows every fall. Mount Tammany and Mount Minsi rise on either side of the river, framing the color from both banks. Pull off at one of the scenic overlooks and keep your camera close.

Promised Land wraps two lakes in hardwoods that turn early and hold their color for weeks. Loop the quiet roads around both lakes, or park and walk the shoreline. Fewer people know about this spot, which makes it feel like your own private view of fall. Bring a thermos of coffee and take your time, there's no rush here!

A drive can show you more fall color in an hour than most hikes will all day. Roll the windows down, pick one of these Poconos scenic drives, and let the color do the work.

Route 507 along Lake Wallenpaupack. The lake runs alongside you for miles, with fall color reflecting right off the water. It's an easy drive with plenty of pull-offs if you want to stop for photos.

Route 447 to Route 209. Oak and hickory trees line this stretch for its full length, turning deep orange and red by mid-October. It's a slower route, and that's the point.

Route 209 toward Jim Thorpe. Head west on 209, and you'll pass through Stroudsburg before the road narrows into the Lehigh Gorge. Branch onto Route 903 and you'll land in Jim Thorpe. The town leans into fall with its own foliage festival most weekends in October.

Plan for extra time, however you piece these together. Fall color shows up best when you're not in a hurry to get anywhere.

Fall activities in the Poconos go beyond scenic drives and hikes. Apple picking, corn mazes, and horseback rides get you out of the car this fall.

Here's where we recommend going:

• Mazezilla at Klingel's Farm: This 11-acre corn maze near Saylorsburg turns into a fall favorite every September and October, with a pumpkin patch right next door.

• Heller Orchards: Swap the maze for a quieter afternoon, filling a bag with fresh-picked apples.

• Bushkill Riding Stables and Deer Path Riding Stable: Both run fall trail rides over the same hills you've been driving past, just at a slower pace.

Fall in the Poconos means festival season, too, with weekends packed from late September through October.

The Great Pocono Pumpkin Festival takes over Country Junction in Lehighton most weekends this time of year. Expect a corn maze, a pumpkin patch, hayrides, and carnival rides. Harvest festivals, lantern-lit nights, and small-town charm round out the rest of the Poconos fall festivals worth adding to your list. Beer gardens and live music take over, too, once Oktoberfest in the Poconos gets going.
